Raluca-Ana-Maria Macovei was born in 1994 in Bârlad, a small town in the Eastern part of Romania.
Macovei’s work is heavily influenced by her childhood; she often brought imaginary worlds to life through drawings and paintings. These were often inspired by both her real life surroundings, seascapes and gardens as well as the more fantastical motifs such as mermaids.
She later specialised in painting in her studies and from 2013-2018 attended the National University of Arts in Bucharest, studying Fine Art. During this time, Macovei was mentored by extremely talented artists and dedicated pedagogues, who with whom she explored the importance of self-knowledge and sincerity in the artistic process.
The work Daydreaming approaches the issue of nature from a personal, direct, environmental and artistic perspective.
It shows trees, plant forms observed directly from the balcony of Macovei’s house. They are carefully painted and offer an intimate perspective on the natural landscape outside, that still blooms amongst the rural. The open composition of the work offers the idea that the natural will always dominate in a much less natural world.
