Joseph Norris is an artist and researcher working in Nottingham.
He is interested in the translation of historical paintings through his own process of contemplation and rejuvenation. Through acts of curiosity and impulsiveness triggering the mind’s eye, Norris’ work explores the visual substance of both his oil paint and the subject of focus, whilst considering the extraneous properties of the support or subject he is working on.
After completing his M.A. in Fine Art at the University of Northampton, he has recently undertaken a collaborative project with another artist, responding to The Wallace Collection in London. This culminated in a show called “Mirror Translation” (Nov 2022 – Jan 2023).
The paper explores the work of Isabelle Graw particularly her two texts ‘The Value of Painting: Notes on Unspecificity, Indexicality, and Highly Valuable Quasi-Persons’ and ‘The Value of Liveliness: Painting as an Index of Agency in the New Economy’, which discuss the Indexicality of painting. Specifically, it seeks to engage and understand Graw's modified and reconfigured model of the indexical. This paper will examine Graw's adaptation of Peirce's theoretical model in her writings on painting.
