Joana Dionisio (1993) is a Portuguese photographer who lives in Porto and works as a freelancer on commissioned and personal projects.
She graduated in Audiovisual Communication Technologies and in 2021 she completed the Master in Artistic Photography.
She has already exhibited her work in individual and group exhibitions and recently she was selected for the FRESH EYES book as an emerging European Photography Talent by GUP Magazine. Her work is characterized by a strong autobiographical strand that explores themes such as identity, family and memory, reflecting on how human beings relate to themselves and to the world.
Diante da infinitude do nada is a piece about fear. It encompasses the common overwhelming feeling of vulnerability that humankind feel when it recognises its existence within a much bigger world, and in this case, universe.
Dionisio has curated a collection of images that make her uncomfortable to sit alongside to sit alongside testimonies from people with similar worries.
The artist has carefully captured both the beauty of the still unfamiliar universe, as well as its unnerving emptiness. This imagery provokes questions regarding our entitlement to know more about the universe and gives a new perspective to the awe we feel surrounding it. The piece also speaks of our understanding of the universe. We have only experienced that beyond our solar system through imagery and second hand accounts from robots. Maybe this is what causes the unsettling distance between us and what we are yet to discover.
